The Wartburg Trabant IFA Club celebrates Red Oktober 2025 in that most English of locations, the picturesque Lake District (non-Club members are most welcome to join us).

Friday: early arrivals can mooch around Kendalʼs shops, cafes, the town museum, the Quaker Tapestry Museum and the Lakeland Museum.

Saturday: we drive through beautiful scenery to the Lakeland Motor Museum with its collection of classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, pedal cars, motoring
related items and memorabilia. An exhibition is dedicated to the land and water speed record activities of Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald Campbell.

In the afternoon we take a ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. This Furness Railway branch line ran from 1896 until closure in the mid-1960s. It reopened as a steam heritage railway in 1973. From Lakeside we motor up the west bank of Lake Windermere to take the historic ferry route across the lake from Far Sawry to Bowness and thence to Kendal for the evening.

Sunday: we drive to the Windermere Jetty Museum. Galleries explore Windermereʼs 200-year-old boating history, bringing to life the lakeʼs boats, builders, sailors, skills and technology through interactive display, oral histories and a fascinating collection of boats, gadgets and curiosities. 30 minute heritage boat trips are available. The café and outdoor terrace, with their superb panoramic views across Windermere towards the Coniston fells, are the perfect places to eat, drink and chat.

At 13:30, Club members amongst the day’s participants have the added joy of the Wartburg Trabant IFA Club AGM in the large airy event space facing the lake. There’ll be time after the AGM to explore more of the museum, Windermere or the wider Lake District.
With so much to see and enjoy why not stay longer than just a weekend?!
