Forget Land’s end to John O’Groats.  To help mark the Club’s 50th Anniversary Year, we’re going on Britain’s newest road trip – the Bryson Line – from the Sussex resort made notorious by the late King George V to the top of Scotland.

Many will know author Bill Bryson’s 1990s best-seller ‘Notes from a Small Island’.  Now, in his latest book ‘The Road to Little Dribling’ he notes that the longest distance you can travel through Britain in a straight line is actually from Bognor Regis on the Sussex coast to Cape Wrath on the north-western tip of mainland Scotland.

Cape Wrath is one of Britain’s iconic cornerstones where the Scottish north and west coasts meet.  The dramatic coast-line offers spectacular views across the Atlantic Ocean and moorland wilderness.  There is no land-mass between here and the Arctic – Orkney can be seen to the north-east and the Western Isles to the south-west.

We’re travelling from south to north leaving Bognor on the 17 September arriving 750 miles later near Durness on 20 Sept.  We’ll stick closely to the Bryson straight line using A and B roads.  The final few miles to the Cape, scheduled for Saturday morning, involves a foot ferry crossing and minibus trip across MoD live firing ranges.

All Eastern Bloc classics are welcome to join us for all or part of the trip, whether a day, part day, lunch or evening meal – we’d look forward to meeting you.  If joining us, you’ll need to book own accommodation but don’t delay especially up near the Cape as accommodation is limited.

The itinerary is below

      • Mon 16/9           Overnight in Bognor Regis
      • Tue 17/9             Drive to Three Queens Hotel, Burton on Trent
      • Wed 18/9           Drive to Milton Hilltop hotel, Carlisle
      • Thu 19/9             Drive to Skylodge Hotel, Perth
      • Fri 20/9               Drive to Tongue – overnight in local B&Bs, plus celebration dinner!
      • Sat 21/9              Short drive to ferry for morning minibus to Cape Wrath

Follow your own route and schedule for the journey back south (contact us to see what others are planning).

Our thanks go to Steve Moses who is planning the precise route.  Contact Richard below for more info including the itinerary and if you wish to meet up with us.  There will also be live tracking each day so that you can see exactly where we are!
