We’re off again, this time in Oxfordshire. It will be good to return to Oxford and this attractive county which we last visited, albeit briefly, on the Club’s 2019 50th anniversary 750-mile road run from Bognor Regis to Cape Wrath at the far north of Scotland.
All ‘Cold War Classic’ vehicles are invited to join us for all or part of this weekend celebrating the best of Eastern Bloc motoring.
Friday: Early arrivals start the weekend at the excellent Soldiers of Oxford Museum. Opened in 2014, the museum tells how conflict has affected the county and its people, from soldiers serving on the front lines to ordinary people living on the Home Front. Parking in Woodstock is free but be prepared to park where you find a space and walk to the museum.
We have a group evening meal reserved in a local restaurant – see below for booking and menu choices.
Saturday: Starting in Oxford, we have a 40-mile drive to Greenham Common Airfield Control Tower.
Our visit will coincide with a regular classic car meet, and the café will be open. The Tower is now a visitor centre preserving the historical legacy of one of the few remaining buildings from the airfield made famous by Cold War peace protests.
Lunch is at the H Café. Our arrival will likely intrigue the many motorcyclist regulars at this popular ‘truck stop’ style café.
From here, it’s a short hop to the famous Pendon Museum where the model-maker’s skill preserves the idyllic rural scene and transport of the 1920s and 30s in miniature form.
Back in Oxford, for those staying over or local to the area, we have a group evening meal booked at the highly recommended ‘Polish Kitchen’ restaurant. See below for booking and menu choices.
Sunday: Leaving Oxford, our vehicles will travel in convoy on a 20-mile run to an Eastern Bloc vehicle meet and train ride at the lovely Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway.
This weekend of Eastern Bloc motoring has been put together using the local knowledge of Club officer Alan Esam. All road run routes will be through attractive scenery – maps will be provided.
Saturday and Sunday road runs will each start at 10am from our suggested hotel, the Travelodge Oxford Abingdon Road.
Interested? Please let us know so that we can confirm whether you wish to join us for all or a part of the event, and we can keep you advised of arrangements, timings, food / drink, and so on. Look forward to hearing from you.
